Anchorage Deals Karros For Jaha

June 5, 1999

Anchorage AK (AP) - In a deal that left many 'Boms fans asking "what's the point?", Anchorage pulled off a shocking deal yesterday and acquired veteran first baseman John Jaha from the Tampa Bay Mets in exchange for first baseman Eric Karros and a first round draft choice. "Eric was unhappy in Anchorage, he has told us that time and again. He was a negative influence in the clubhouse and we felt that it was better for both parties for us to go separate ways." said owner Nick Tulach. Many questioned why Anchorage went after another first baseman instead of pitching, which has been very poor. "We felt we needed someone who can not only hit for average, but also had some pop in his bat. That someone just happened to be John Jaha. Not only will he get us the 30 homeruns that Karros did, he's a better defender and will hit .300." said Tulach.

Anchorage now feels that they have solidified their lineup even further, with all positions solid, possibly with the exception of right field. "Moises has done a great job for us out there. We definately are not dissatisfied with his performance, particluarly defensively. He is solid." said Tulach when asked if he was looking to replace Alou.

Notes:

- VanLandingham has been called up off the DL and will be making his first start since May 17th. "I feel excellent. I just hope I can keep up my performance on the field." said VanLandingham. He is the team's best pitcher with a 2.04 ERA and 29 strikeout and just 2 walks in 39 and 2/3 innings.

- Anchorage is said to be looking for a left-handed bat, preferably with good contact hitting and decent speed.
