Abominations Place Vaughn, Lieberthal on DL June 2, 1999
Anchorage AK (AP) - Anchorage today placed leftfielder Greg Vaughn and catcher
Mike Lieberthal on the 15-day disabled list. They join teammates Billy Wagner
and Willie VanLandingham who are already on the DL. Vaughn suffered a strained
quadriceps last week and further diagnosis revealed a tear in the muscle, which
may have been a result of him playing the last series with it. "I wanted to
help this team win, now I caused more harm then good. I could kick myself for
doing it. I really let the guys down." said Vaughn.
Lieberthal is another story. The 'Boms catcher suffered a broken cheekbone
in a collision at the plate back on May 17th. He has been wearing a special
mask while rehabbing in AAA but has not responded well and has been placed
on the DL. "It hasn't healed as fast as we'd hoped, so we felt it was
necessary to give him some rest. Lynn has stepped in and played well, but we
really are gonna miss Mikey." said manager Nick Tulach.
VanLandingham and Wagner have both been on the DL since May 18th and are
eligable to come off in two days. VanLandingham has been ready for sometime
now and is anxious to get back on the mound. "I really didn't want them to
put me on [the disabled list], but they wanted to be sure that I was okay,
especially after the earlier season elbow injury I had in my opener. I feel
100% ready to go. Hopefully the rust will come off quick." said VanLandingham.
Wagner, though eliable at the same time as VanLandingham, will not be ready
for at least two more week. "Doctors say closer to four, Billy says two [weeks]
We'll just have to wait and see. We don't want his elbow to be tender at all.
We need him to be strong in the pen." said Tulach.
Notes:
- Anchorage firstbaseman Eric Karros has seemed to fall out of favor with his
manager Nick Tulach. Though he is still in the lineup, Karros is said to
be on the trading block and being shopped around hard.
- Also rumored to be available are: lefty Scott Karl, starter Felipe Lira,
injured lefty Billy Wagner, who has been talked about for almost a season,
reserves Mickey Tettleton and Luis Alicea.
