Deadwood (AP) - Anchorage scored eight runs in the final three frames but still
managed to lose the game last night. After Felipe Lira gave up eight runs in
the first four innings to give Deadwood an 8-1 advantage, a determined
Abomination ballclub came back to take a two run lead into the bottom of the
ninth. Vaughn Eshelmangave up one earned run in the ninth and closer Eddie
Guardado gave up the tying run to send the game into extra innings. Mike
Holtz pitched 2 1/3 good innings in the extra frames, but gave up a game winning
homerun to Steve Finley in the bottom of the 12th.
"Our guys really played their hearts out, but we just ran out of gas. Without
our best pitcher in the bullpen, we are going to have days like this. Eddie
[Guardado] struggled but he hasn't pitched much lately, so I can't blame him."
said team owner Nick Tulach, who is acting manager right now. Mosies Alou
and Jeff Cirillo both had four-hit games and both homered in the contest. Alex
Ochoa played his final game as a 'Bom before he departed to Punxatawney.
Anchorage opens up a series at Montreal tomorrow. Due to the acquistion
of Scott Aldred, the starter for Anchorage has not been determined yet.
