Abominations Fill Hole in Rotation

May 23, 1999

Anchorage AK (AP) - The Abominations took a step toward filling the hole in their rotation that was vacated by the departure of pitcher Brett Tomko. They did it in a very strange way though, by trading the player they received for Tomko. Back in April, Anchorage dealt Tomko to Medina for outfielder Alex Ochoa and a first round draft pick. Now, with a rash of injuries to their pitching staff, they were forced to deal Ochoa to Punxatawney for starter Scott Aldred. "We feel that with Scott, Willie [VanLandingham], Mike [Bottenfield], Lira, and Karl, that we are more solid then we were with Tomko. Brett was a great talent but Scotty brings us more consistency." said owner Nick Tulach. "Plus we still have the draft pick, which we hope will yield a good prospect."

Injuries have hurt Anchorage, leaving their bullpen short of their best pitcher, Billy Wagner, and their starting rotation short of ace Willie VanLandingham. Catcher Mike Lieberthal, who was off to a great start but fell into a slump in May, has been sent to AAA for rehab. VanLandingham has been working in AAA as well, and is set to return after his 15 days on the DL is up.

Anchorage GM "the Man" has said that they are still willing to talk with team regarding either their draft picks, which are at #26 and #14 in the amateur draft that is approaching in June.
