PVBL: Anchorage Abominations
Anchorage Overpowers New Diggens

May 6, 1999

Anchorage AK (AP) - The Abominations broke out of their five game slump yesterday by using some good old-fashioned long-ball. Eric Karros, Greg Vaughn and Jeff Cirillo all hit homeruns that accounted for all of Anchorage's scoring in the game. Vaughn and Karros hit solo shots and Cirillo's was a three run bomb that broke open the game for Anchorage.

With one out in the bottom of the eighth and Gary DiSarcina and Miguel Cairo on base, Cirillo stepped up and drove the ball down the line and off the leaping Barry Bonds' glove for his third homerun of the year. "I turned on the pitch and I didn't think it was going to make it, but the wind was blowing out that way and it carried out of the park." said Cirillo.

During the game, Anchorage's up-and-coming star Miguel Cairo injured his knee diving for a ground ball. The injury is not thought to be serious, but manager Ted Simmons doesn't want to take any chances. "Miguel toughed it out for the remainder of the game, but he'll sit for the next game and until he is 100%. This has nothing to do with his current hitting slump, we just don't want to take any chances." said Simmons. Miguel has gone hitless in his last 21 at bats. Gary DiSarcina, the 'Boms utility infielder, will fill in at second base.

'Boms Trade Minor League Shortstop for Pitching Prospect

Anchorage AK (AP) - The Abominations announced a deal that sent minor league shortstop Damion Easley to the Hartford Whalers for pitching prospect Steve Tsamis. Tsamis has a career record of 1-4 in six starts with a 5.13 ERA. "We haven't made a decision as to whether to call him up or not. For now, he'll continue to throw in the minors until we can evaluate him better." said pitching coach Chuck Crim.

Notes:

- Rumors persist that manager Ted Simmons is still on the hot seat. Moving firstbaseman Eric Karros down in the lineup was said to be "a strong recommendation from upper management" and may should that management has lost faith in the first year manager. Owner Nick Tulach said that he is still behind Simmons and that there have been no discussion about replacing him.

- Abominations' players have gotten on F.P. Santangelo's case for being too laid back lately. "He needs to live on the edge. He feeds off of it. He's like a white Dennis Rodman." said infielder Eric Karros. F.P. hasn't caused problems in the clubhouse nor has he made the news lately in public. "This is the first time in years that I have gone a whole week without [soiling] my pants or forgetting who I am. It feels kinda nice." said Santangelo.
