New Diggens (AP) - The Abominations battled through a tough 14-inning
campaign to emerge victorious against New Diggens Budweiser Frogs, 7-4. The
victory came after closer Eddie Guardado blew the save opportunity in the
bottom of the ninth, tying the game at 4 a piece and sending it into extra
innings. "Tomko got out of a lot of tough jams early in the game, but our
bullpen was not able to close it out today. Luckily, our offense came through
and we were able to pull off the victory. It was ugly, but its still a win."
said manager Ted Simmons, whose career record is 10-5.
Newcomer Rickey Henderson saw his first action of the season, as he stepped
up to the plate and took a pitch off his left chin. "What a way to start the
year!" said Henderson. Henderson was then inserted into the unlikely position
of catcher, which he hadn't played since high school, due to backup Chuck Lynn's
sore shoulder. "Well, I have been doing a little catching in the bullpen, to
help out some guys loosening up. Anyway I can get into the lineup is fine with
me." said Henderson.
Anchorage closes out the final two games at New Diggens and then returns home
to face rival Ann Arbor.
News:
- 'Boms pitching coach is supposedly unhappy with the progress of young
fireballer Brett Tomko. "He hasn't been working very hard and hasn't been
studying the films that he is supposed to. I am very disappointed."
commented pitching coach Chuck Crim. Rumor are swirling that Anchorage
may be looking to deal Tomko.
- Anchorage has also been shopping around closer Eddie Guardado and setup man
Billy Wagner. "We have said all along that there are a number of guys who
are franchise-type players. Those two are not on that list, so yes, we will
look at offers for them, particularly involving outfielders or starting
pitching."
