Abominations Steal Victory From AllKnighters April 19, 1999
Ann Arbor (AP) - Despite a poor performance by lefty Scoot Karl, Anchorage
was able to literally steal the victory from Ann Arbor last night. Anchorage
swiped a total of six bases in seven attempts last night and scored with two
sacrifice flys. "I thought we needed to be more aggressive on base paths. So
we made the adjustment and it worked out well for us." said manager Ted
Simmons, who has a career record of 8-3.
Karl (2-0) gave up 13 hits in just 5 2/3 innings and four earned runs. He
was able to earn the victory because of the crafty base running by his
teammates. "They won the game for me last night, I really stunk up the place.
There is no excuse for my performance last night." said Karl afterward in the
locker room.
Eddie Guardado, the 'Boms closer, earned his third save of the season,
striking out two of three in the ninth. Stan Javier made his first appearance
of the season, going one for one filling in for Jeff Cirillo at third base.
'Boms Take Rubber-Match From Ann Arbor
Ann Arbor (AP) - Solid pitching, good hitting and a big inning were the
ingredients for victory Sunday afternoon as the Abominations cruzed to an 11-3
victory over the second-place AllKnighters to capture the series 2-1.
Brett Tomko bounced back from a poor outing with a solid performance. He
threw seven innings, giving up two earned runs on seven hits and striking out
two. "I found my rythm ealry and was able to keep their hitters off balance
pretty much the whole day." commented Tomko (2-1).
The long ball was the weapon of choice for Anchorage batters today as they
went yard five times, including a two homerun performance by Greg Vaughn, who
is tied for the league lead in RBIs with 11. "These guys are finding ways to
win. They are really giving it their all. I like the effort put out the last
two days."
Garret Anderson was given the day off and Mickey Tettleton made his first
appearance as an Abomination. He was 1 for 5 with an RBI.
Notes:
- During the recent road trip, Abominations management has taken time to
get the fans in Alaska more involved in baseball. They have held a series
of promotions to help familiarize the fans with the rules of baseball.
"We are having 'How to heckle an ump and/or player' and 'The art of infield
chatter', as well as 'Reading those weird signs the base coaches give'
courses. The turnout has been good and no lawsuits have been filed, so I'd
say its a success." said owner Nick Tulach.
- After his 0-11 series versus Ann Arbor, F.P. Santangelo was seen sulking
in a corner of the locker room, just minutes before the shuttle was to arrive
to return the team to the airport. When asked for comment, F.P. replied:
"This is what happens when I don't have mustard for a while."
- No new leads have been found in the search for the missing feet. "Without
those feet, we may have to relocate the team. How Abominable can a monster
be without big, hairy feet?" said GM "the Man" after ringing out his socks
in the team whirlpool.
