Lira Struggles As 'Boms Lose To Bears April 16, 1999
Anchorage AK (AP) - The Truro Bears came ready to play and their offense
exploded on Anchorage starter Felipe Lira (1-1), who only lasted 2 1/3 innings
in the 9-2 loss. Lira, whose first outing was stellar, got rocked for four
runs in the second and another in the third before giving way to reliever
Don Wengret, who lasted the rest of the way, giving up 4 runs on four hits
in 6 2/3 innings.
Garret Anderson continued to be on fire with three hits. But they were
all singles and, aside from Karros' two-run homerun in the seventh, Anchorage
batters provided little offense. "We got behind ealry and just never got our
heads into the game. The second inning really deflated us." commented
shortstop Mark Grudzielanek, who was 1 for 3.
Anchorage opens up a crucial early season series at Ann Arbor tomorrow.
Notes:
- Abominations starter Felipe Lira was so disgusted after his last outing
that he kicked the team's bench heater after being pulled in the third
inning. The kick set off a series of minor explosions in the dugout
which had players scrambling for the field. "It was crazy. All of a sudden
'BOOM!' and three guys pants were on fire. I thought I was in a Michael
Jackson concert, or something." said veteran centerfielder Stan Javier.
Players and coaches had to spend the remainder of the game watching from
the bullpen. Luckily no one was hurt. Dugout heaters should be repaired
in time for their next home game.
- Anchorage police have now become involved in the search for the missing
mascot feet. Two dozen new police have been hired to patrol the streets
and to "keep an eye out for anything furry". "They [the missing feet]
could very well have cost us the game today. Guys were distracted all
day yesterday as we took the day off to look for those feet." said
manager Ted Simmons. No new leads have been uncovered so far, but police
believe they are getting close. "We've had several tips that the feet
are still in the Anchorage area, perhaps even still in the stadium."
commented Anchorage GM "the Man".
