PVBL: Washington Sea Dogs
Washington Leaves Ogea Open

October 20, 1998

(AP) WASHINGTON--Washington has left Chad Ogea unprotected to the free-agent plan despite rumors that the righthander would be protected.

"We plan to try to re-acquire Ogea if he is taken in the draft," GM Aaron Weiner said. "We're very bright on his future, and we're just hoping that we're able to hold onto him."

Washington was hoping that Ogea would fit under the 24-and-under rule, but instead found out that since he would turn 25 before the FA plan took place, he would be unprotected.

"I'm very sad to hear that the Sea Dogs were unable to protect me in the draft," Ogea said. "I was hoping to be a part of the team here for a long time, especially with all the success they're having. But if I'm drafted, I understand."

Weiner said that they couldn't leave any of the others unprotected.

"No way we could do that," Weiner said. "To leave any of our four just dangling would be suicide."

Weiner, without mentioning names, also said that he was surprised at some of the other protection lists.

"Well, we're particularly surprised at Motor City's, though we understand their logic," Weiner said. "And we're very surprised at Tucson's and Vero Beach's."

Overall, Weiner said that no matter who he loses, he's covered himself.

"Well...we're pretty much set no matter what happens," Weiner said. "We've got a good mix of youth and age."
