Bums Clinch Share of Picard Crown September 16, 1998
Vero Beach, FL (AP) - The Vero Beach Bums will probably not meet the
Spokane Pirates in a one-game divisional playoff at the end of the season.
However, that is the Bums' worst case scenario; they will finish no worse
than tied for first in the DL Picard. The Bums' magic number is down to 1,
thanks to a 5-3 win against the Binghamton Mets and two Spokane losses to
the Hoersts of Chicago. The Vero Beach win, credited to spot starter John
Cummings, snapped a 4-game losing streak.
"All right, I give up," exclaimed Bums manager Phil Garner with an
exasperated grin. "I will finally admit that we are going to win the
division."
Garner noted that the Bums will continue to rotate starters and reserves
into the lineup and rotation during the final few weeks of the season, in
order to stay fresh for the playoffs.
