Vero Beach sweeps Chicago in 5-1 win April 13, 1998
Chicago, IL (AP) The Vero Beach Bums won their fourth straight game
against the ill-named Chicago Hoersts yesterday by a score of 5-1. The
game was never close, as the Hoersts didn't score until the bottom of the
ninth inning against Bums long reliever John Cummings.
Bums starter Ismael Valdes made up for his awful first start by pitching
7 2/3 scoreless innings against the Hoersts. He gave up just 3 hits and
walked none. Angel Miranda and John Cummings swept up for Valdes.
DH/1B Jeff King and CF Chuck Carr, getting work at third base in place of
Dave Hollins, each hit a 2-run home run in this contest. Gregg Jefferies,
playing almost every day in left field, tore up the basepaths with 3
stolen bases against Chicago catcher Mark Parent.
Chicago's lone run came on a home run by rookie Jose Guillen in the ninth
inning.
