PVBL: Spokane Pirates
Pirates Struggle in First Half

July 13, 1998

From the Spokesman Review - The Spokane Pirates continue to struggle. With Vero Beach practically statistically eliminating the Buc's at the all-star break, The Pirates will have to settle for a wild card spot, and even that doesn't look too likely.

It is the same old story, the Pirates are at or near the top in just about every offensive category and near the bottom in just about every pitching stat.

GM Jeremey Stephens had this to say about the teams woes, "Well, the first half of last year we kicked some major ass! We had a nine game lead at one point. Then it seems the physics of the entire WORLD changed, or something. I don't know how else to put it exactly. Our pitching was bad, but our hitting more than made up for it. Now we can't overcome it. We have been adjusting, but these things take time. My mistake was thinking that this problem could be cured in one season, we are now adopting a multi-year plan attitude about the whole situation.

We will get Maddux next year, but at this time I won't make any promises about our performance until we draft again."

In other news the all-stars were chosen and this reporter can not decide which is a bigger surprise. The fact that Brady Anderson was not chosen, or the fact that Matheney was. Oh how fickle the fans are! I guess they were impressed by todays performance where Matheney went 4 for 4 with three homeruns. Baaaaaaaad contact!
