PVBL: Spokane Pirates
Spokane Ends Homestand with a Loss

April 14, 1998

Spokane ended its seven game home stand by losing another game to Sacramento, doping their record to 3-4 on the year. Despite the loss, Manager Jeremey Stephens was in a surprisingly good mood.

"We lost 3 to 2, which means that Cone went out there and did what we are paying him to. Our hitting is a little inconsistent this year, but as soon as McGwire, Davis and Stedronsky turn it on, we will win some games."

The three players mentioned are batting; .185, .222, and .167 respectively.

"Those guys are big guns. And it is a FACT that they will come around. If our pitchers can allow only three runs in every game, we will own this league! We are not going to let a sub .500 record this early in the season get us down at all. There is still a lot of time.

We were criticized for trading for Brady [Anderson], well Brady has 5 home runs in seven games. We were Criticized for our entire batting order. "Bad contact. Baaaaaaad contact". Well, our teams batting average is .269, better than anyone but Larimar. We were criticized for the decisions I made. "Villanueva...isn't the answer for contact either." Hector is batting .286. I'd like to know what our critics have to say to that. We have been trashed in the Washington press, but they are pretty quiet now! I'd be quiet too if I had only scored 21 runs in seven games. We've got a double header with them tomorrow, if they expect to beat us I hope they can score more than three runs per game, CZ I know we will."

When I asked Jeremey where this rivalry with Washington stems from, given the facts that they are in separate divisions, and separated geographically by 3,000 miles, Jeremey replied,"Its not really a rivalry, it's just that they are a bunch of wimps. And I won't be criticized by a bunch of guys that are only in this league because the PVBL hires the....well...challenged. Lets just leave it at that. Of course, I am just referring to the front office. They have some high caliber athletes on that team, but unfortunately, due to inept management, they will never be able to contend. If any of you guys want to play for a team that has a chance, give me a call. We'll talk."
