PVBL: Spokane Pirates
Sacramento and Spokane Split

April 12, 1998

The Spokane Pirates split a couple games with the Sacramento Knights. Youngster Jamey Wright pitched well in the first game, until the seventh, when he gave up 3 runs. "I went to the mound because it looked like he had lost some speed." Said Manager Jeremey Stephens, "He told me that he was ok, and just wanted to finish the inning. I guess next time I'll have to remember who the Manager is."

After that they fell to pieces, Nick Blair finished the seventh, but gave up two in the eighth. The Pirates lost by a score of 7-4.

But they came out for the second game in a frenzy! It seems that after losing to one of the worst teams (record wise) in the league, the Pirates resorted to last years strategy. "If you can't out pitch 'em. Out slug 'em!" And they did just that. Spokane gave up eight runs over the course of the next nine innings, but at the same time shelled Sacramento pitchers for 18 hits and 19 runs. Briefly, here are a few quotes:

Jeremey Stephens: "I am trying to build this team into a pitching machine, so in many ways today was a huge let down. We fell back into the same old habits."

Mark McGwire: "We're doing our part, I just hope that the pitchers can settle down and do their job. How tough can it be? They only have to play once every five days!"

Brady Anderson (4 hits, 3HR's, and 10 RBI's TODAY): "I cant remember EVER being on a team that scored 19 runs in one game! Thats just unreal! It was Crazy!"

Well Brady, welcome to Spokane. If they could only pitch....

Notable:
Mark McGwire is batting .167 on the year and went 1for 5 in todays offensive display.
On the contrary: Brady anderson .400 10hits 5HR's

Says Stephens, "It's nice having a back-up when Mark goes into his little slumps"
