Roswell Weather Balloons Report

August 10, 1998

With a couple recent losses, Roswell has slipped to 7 games back of the red hot New Iberia Swamp Rats. However, the team has a few great players who deserve great credit for their play so far.

Offensively, one clear leader has been OF Damon Mashore. He had a bit of success as a major league fill in last year, and has hit 12 doubles, a triple, and 7 homers while batting .260 with 27 RBI.

Catcher Fred Young has outshined his platoon partner Mike Bannister, currently hitting .277 with 12 doubles. Bannister is batting just .230, and has played worse defense.

LF Billy Ashley is hitting .283 so far in limited action, having only 60 at bats in the part of the season he has played so far.

3B Kevin Sefcik is tied with Mashore for the team homerun lead, and has driven in 25 runs. He's done fairly well so far with powerhitting, but is batting just .229.

The biggest star on the team has been starter Curly Karkovice. He has started 6 games, and all of them have been quality starts. So far, he is 4-2 with 0.97 ERA. He has struck out 34 batters while walking just 17 in 46 1/3 innings. "I'm really looking forward to another chance in the big time, I'm ready as soon as I'm needed," said 'CurlyK.' So far, he has struggled in the majors, throwing in 8 games, 4 starts, with a 2-0 record and 7.83 ERA.

Steve Tsamis has been the 2nd best starter, with a 3-3 record and 3.12 ERA. Dustin Hermanson has been working to try and improve his pitches, but he has just a 3-6 record and 3.77 ERA.

Pat Mahomes and Jaime Bluma have been two of the best relievers out there. Mahomes is 1-1 with a 1.74 ERA with 8 saves and 5 holds while Bluma is 2-1 with a 1.72 ERA with 6 saves. Bill Harrell has been an excellent setup man, with 8 holds and a 3.67 ERA.

Overall, Roswell has looked decent. Not one of the best, but they have shown sparks of promise, especially in Karkovice, Mashore, and Young. With the rest of the season ahead, Roswell hopes to improve and play as well as their parent organization Punxatawney.
