PVBL: Phoenix Gila Monsters
Phoenix Acquires Steve Avery

April 16, 1998

In a not-too-surprinsing move today, the Phoenix Gila Monsters traded hitting prospect Angel Kaat and pitching prospect Amaury Telemaco to the Laurel Lynx for starting pitcher Steve Avery.

Kaat, who was aquired from the Montreal Royals for the 29th pick in the free agent draft, is one of the top CF prospects in the game, and Telemaco, who was selected with the 36th free agent pick, is a solid pitching prospect. "We're looking to contend in about 2 years, and Angel ay or may not be ready by then. Steve Avery is already ready, and will be even better in 2 years. Plus, we believe that Ryan George is our centerfielder of the future, and we want Angel to be somewhere where he can develop his full potential. We wish him and Amaury the best of luck in Laurel."

Avery will probably settle into the Monster's lineup as a 4th starter while he adjusts to the move to Phoenix. After he settles in, Avery may be moved to the 3rd starter role, with Pedro Astacio reverting to the 4th starter role. Park, the so-called 'F' pitcher, will be moved to the fifth starter role. Park is out to show this season that 'F' stands for flamethrower, and has already started that with a brilliant outing against the arch-rival Washington Sea Dogs. Park completes an excellent rotation for the Gila Monsters of:

Shane Reynolds (Last year's Cy Young winner)
Wilson Alvarez
Pedro Astacio
Steve Avery
Chan Ho Park
