Trade Deadline Passes, Deadwood Visits Edmonton August 31, 1998
(Edmonton) The trade deadline passed last night and the second place
Deadwood Outlaws traded slugging catcher Javier Lopez, SS Shawon Dunston,
and RHP Ramon Martinez to the Sacramento Knights for RHP Alan Benes (8-10
3.64 ERA) and RHP Billy Taylor (4-3 17 saves 2.34 ERA). Benes will join
the rotation (Replacing recently traded RHP Roger Clemens) while Taylor
will help solidfy the bullpen.
Earlier in the week, the Outlaws traded RHP Roger Clemens and RHP Jeff
Brantley to Richmond for SS Travis Fryman (.281 9 hr, 32 rbi) and CF Steve
Finley (.271, 16 HR, 58 RBI, 21 SB). All the new-comers are expected to be
available sometime during the upcoming series against divison leading
Edmonton.
Deadwood is currently six games back of Edmonton and 3 1/2 games back of
Motor City in the WIld Card race. Neither Edmonton or Motor City had made
any trades by press time.
