Royals Face Outlaws in Season's Final Series October 2, 1998
MONTREAL (AP) - The Montreal Royals put up a valiant effort, winning 5 in a row, but they couldn't catch up to the Outlaws, this year's prima donnas.
After a day off on Thursday, today the Royals will play the Deadwood Outlaws, the McCoy division's new champs, in a 3-game series. While this series is meaningless, for fans it is a chance for Royals fans to dream of what might of been for the Royals this season. A sweep--or even a series win for the Royals--will mean nothing in the standings, but it at least the Boys in Blue will end the season on a good note.
Currently, the Royals are 9 games over .500, their best mark this season. "All the players are mad at themselves, despite playing better ball than they have all season," comments manager Gary Carter. "We all wish we had stepped up a month or a week before.
"This, no question, is a championship calibre team. Deadwood just beat us to it."
Whatever the outcome, the Outlaws have dominated the Montreal Royals in 1998. The season series stands at 12-17 in favour of the Outlaws.
