PVBL: Montreal Royals
Montreal Widens Talent Pool on Bench

July 25, 1998

HARTFORD (AP)--25 Montreal Royals players made the flight to Hartford, and 25 made the non-stop trip to Edmonton, only there was a different man sitting at seat 15C. His name is Tony Phillips, a well-travelled veteran leftfielder who left the game Friday (a 1-0 win for the Whalers), only to find out that he was traded to the Montreal team.

"I still have a lot of games left against my former team [the Hartford Whalers," says Phillips after word of the trade, "but I'll be playing against them like I would against any other team."

Phillips should get more playing time with the pennant-hungry Royals, although that doesn't say much considering he played in only 12 games all season. Phillips has gone 12-for-46 this season. Phillips will continue to play of the bench, although he will get occasional starts playing either left or centerfield in replacement of Tim Raines or Rusty Greer.

"It's been a frustrating year, not being able to contribute as much as I'd like to," says Phillips. "I hold no grudge against Mr. Chrabascz because he had to give the playing time to his younger players. I know I won't be starting every day in Montreal, but I'm sure I'll get chances to contribute in games, especially when it's tight."

"I'm excited to be teammates with [Tim Raines]. I still believe he's the best leadoff man in the game."

Santo Skinner did not get on the plane to Edmonton. He has been optioned to Ottawa.

Phillips was exchanged as part of a 3-man deal, sending minor league prospects John Hunter and Gary Baker to Hartford. No word on whether they will continue to play in the Whaler's minor league system. Phillips was the latest to get sent away in the binge by Hartford to get rid of pricy and coveted veterans. Palmeiro, Griffey, Sheffield and Maddux were also exchanged for younger players.

"Who knows what's going on in the minds of the fans in Hartford right now," says owner Carbonetto. This team is nothing what it looked like after last their World Championship."
