Pending approval, the Mustangs have announced a trade with the Hartford
Whalers, sending hitter extraordinaire Geronimo Berroa to Hartford in exchange
for pitching ace Arthur Rhodes, plus one of Hartford's many 1st and 2nd round
free agent draft picks.
"We took a long hard look at our roster", says Mustang owner Randy Reese, " We
already have one of the youngest teams in the league. Although Berroa is
hitting wonderfully for us, we feel that we cant compete this year, and maybe
not even next year. However, once our young players mature, we think we will
be in the playoff hunt for years to come. The average age of our whole team is
only 24.7 years old."
Reese said that with the addition of Jacob Cruz, recently obtained in a trade
with Edmonton, the outfield will get pretty crowded. "Our future outfield will
consist of Cruz, Mike Cameron, and Alex Ochoa. Not a bad outfield!"
Other players are considered up for trade, including power hitter Jay Buhner,
and pitchers Rheal Cormier, Marc Wilkins, Darren Driefort, and Dan Naulty. "If
a team needs a push to get through the playoffs, than Buhner is their man."
says Reese, "Rheal has been a consistent starter, with an ERA under 4.00. We
have some great young pitching coming up through the ranks, which makes one of
our relief pitchers expendable."
