Mustangs Swap Star Pitching

July 13, 1998

Medina (AP)- Mustangs owner Randy Reese announced a trade with Houston today. "We sent pitcher Mariano Rivera and slugger Albert Belle to Houston for pitchers Alex Fernandez, Pete Shourek, and Houston's #1 pick in next years Amateur Draft." When asked by reporters why the deal was made, Reese replied, "Good pitching is a hot commodity. Although we feel we have quality pitchers, we are still a young staff. I know Shrouek and Fernandez are only 25 and 26 respectively, we feel they can help us this year. We had extra power in the lineup, so the deal seemed obvious. We were encouraged by the talent in this past amateur draft, so that helped clinch the deal." Reese couldn't comment on the new rotation, and said he would leave that to the Mustangs manager, Dick Chudnow. "It does look like we have any extra starter available, if anyone might be interested."
