Medina Makes Blockbuster Trade Deals April 22, 1998
Medina(AP)- The Medina Mustangs today announced two major trades today. In the
first trade, Medina sent super prospect Andruw Jones to Galena for two top
prospects, pitcher Darren Dreifort and second baseman Roberto Mejia, and low
minor league prospect Jim Koppe.
"Hey, when the commisioner wants to make a deal, you make the deal!" said
owner Randy Reese. "He was very cordial about it, but the two goons he brought
with him looked pretty mean! Besides, we have nothing in the way of pitching
in our farm system, and Meija is one of the top rated 2nd basemen in the
minors."
In the second trade, Medina sent right fielder prospect Hugh Coleman and left
fielder Marc Newfield to Duluth for power hitter Albert Belle, and Duluths #2
and #3 pick in the upcoming amateur draft. When asked about dealing two of his
outfield prospects, Reese snapped, "Hey! Do you have any idea how much right
fielders eat?"
Both trades are pending commisioner approval, but Reese expects Belle and
possibly Driefort in the lineup within a day or two.
