PVBL: Laurel Lynx
Lynx Sweep 2-Game Series Against Macon

April 23, 1998

LAUREL, MARYLAND - A two game sweep of Macon pushed the Lynx to 10-7, the first time team has been 3 games above the .500 mark. Manager Floyd Hoerst speculated that it maybe the last time the team is at this level for a while.

Hoerst stated "The early season success has been enjoyable, but tomorrow will be the first time we faced Galena (12-3) this season. It would be great to be able to win one of the next two games with the Hamsters, but the pitching match-ups don't look to be in our favor. Hopefully Karsay will come up big tomorrow and take some pressure off of Telemaco in the second game of the series."

Laurel won the first game with Macon raising Scott Erickson's record to 2-1. The Lynx scored 11 runs by pounding out 18 hits including 6 doubles and 2 home runs. The second game was won with a 2 run rally in the 8th inning that snapped a 2-2 tie and made a winner out of rookie Marc Pisciotta (3-0).

Team Notes

The team continues to be lead by the bat of 1B Jeff Bagwell, currently batting .379 with 11 HR and 16 RBI. Perhaps the biggest surprise has been the somewhat respectable performance of the bullpen. Rookie 2nd round draft pick Marc Pisciotta is 3-0 in relief with an even 1.00 ERA. Strong contributions have also been made by lefty Don Getzien (2-0, 0.00, 2 saves) and Phil Vaughn (0-0, 0.00 ERA, 2 saves)

Looking like a bad deal

In a meeting with reporters after the Macon series GM Sean Dawson addressed the criticism of the recent trade of Steve Avery. Dawson stated "I am not going to try and justify any trade at this point. The league is aware that well are trying to build a nucleus of young offensive talent and hopefully Angel Katt can be a part of that. Anything that Telemaco can add would be a plus." Dawson continued "Obviously if Katt doesn't reach his potential the deal won't be a good one from our perspective." Dawson hinted that reports calling Steve Avery a great pitcher at this point in his career (6-15 4.58 ERA) may be a reach. "He has great potential and hopefully he will perform up to his abilities in Phoenix. Honestly, we had the 3rd worst record in the league with him last year and we didn't see staying put as an option."

Trade Winds

The Lynx are among the teams looking to add picks for the upcomming amateur draft and is also taking offers for Rich Becker. As previously reported the team would like to deal some OF prospects for IF prospects regardless of position.
