Avery Exchanged for prospects Kaat and Telemaco April 16, 1998
LAUREL, MARYLAND--In an anticipated move the team acquired OF prospect Angel Katt and RHP
Amaury Telemaco from Phoenix in exchange for LHP Steve Avery. Team GM
Sean Dawson said "Steve Avery is a quality starter and only 24, and would
probably help us more now. However, we felt that a player with 90+ contact
potential and 90+ power potential was too much to pass up." The team has
acquired a core of young offensive talent with OFs Katt (18), Red Seward
(20), Jermaine Dye (21), Tony Birdsall (22), Rod Myers (22), Rich Becker
(23), Bubba Trammell (23), Brooks Kieschnick (22), and Jemaine Allensworth
(23). These go along with 1B Jeff Bagwell (26) and 3B Chris Snopek (24).
Dawson stated that the team "would look to add pitching to replace Avery in
the amateur draft and free agent draft next season." He added that "this
gives us a team of outfield prospects and we are looking to deal one or some
of them for IF or C prospects. Its either that or hand one these guys a 2b
glove and hope he can play there."
