Larimer Escapes Nature's Wrath, but not Dybala May 12, 1998
Phoenix, AZ -- Team owner John Dybala may be regretting canceling his
plans to accompany the team on their road trip to Phoenix right about now.
As the Knights beat their division rivals, the Phoenix Gila Monsters,
word came that northern Colorado was belted overnight with a foot of snow,
the first significant snowfall reported in the area since the October 1997
blizzard which paralyzed the Colorado Front Range. The National Weather
Service reports that blizzard conditions will prevail throughout the
weekend.
Later, a report came that team owner Dybala, who was en route to Cheyenne,
Wyoming, for a job interview, was involved in a minor car accident.
A Colorado State Patrol officer reported a car stuck in a snowbank in a
ditch on the side of Interstate 25 just north of Fort Collins at
approxmiately 12:15 PM MST. A few minutes later, the patrolman reported
that it was Dybala's Kia Sephia, which ended up in the ditch after it
hit a patch of ice, spun 3 1/2 times, and came to a stop facing south in
the left northbound lane. Dybala apparently tried to get the car to the
shoulder, but ended up driving off the road. A passing motorist in a
pickup truck towed the car out, and Dybala immediately canceled his plans
and returned to his Fort Collins home, where he will spend the rest of the
day inside with his computer and a mug of hot chocolate, devising a plan
to move to southern California as soon as possible.
