"You know ... right now I think I envy Mr. Dybala. There are some
advantages to not being able to feel one foot." This from Knights center
fielder Jim Edmonds, forced to return to the lineup early after teammate
Lenny Dykstra went down with bone spurs for 6 to 8 weeks. Edmonds himself
had been riding the bench with a fractured toe, and the team had hoped to
keep him there until the injury was healed. Edmonds obviously was playing
in pain after manager Don Baylor substituted Edmonds for Dykstra in the
middle of yesterday's game, but it couldn't have been as bad as the pain
the Knights felt with a gaping hole in their lineup. When Edmonds was
playing, the team went 10-1. Since he was benched, the team has been 3-3.
Dykstra was assigned to the DL this morning. Outfielder Joe Orsulak was
called up to replace him, and Orsulak will DH against left-handed
pitching. Paul Sorrento has struggled a bit in the early part of the
season against lefties. Steve Buechele will continue to play at 3B, but he
will now be platooning with Mark McLemore.
Meanwhile, word is that Dybala is looking for a third baseman who is
younger than Buechele and has more defensive ability than utilityman Jeff
Branson.
