Groundhogs and Whalers Swap Power for Power December 15, 1998
Hartford, CT (AP)- The Hartford Whalers, looking to shore up their pitching
staff, reacquired veteran hurler Ken Hill today from the Punxatawney
Groundhogs. In return, Hartford sent veteran slugger Geronimo Berroa. Hill
said of the news, "I'm not surprised and I'm anxious to get back to Hartford.
I never knew what Dan (Shapiro) wanted out of me to begin with. It seemed like
I was on the block from the day I got here." Well, he was. "I hope we can
bring pride, glory and a second championship back to Hartford," continued Hill.
GM Peter Gammons simply said, "It was even-up, no questions asked. We need a
veteran pitcher and they needed a veteran bat off the bench. We've lost a lot
of our veteran sluggers already but we've acquired Ken Hill and Tom Gordon in
the process. We feel we have enough solid young talent to produce
offensively." Indeed, catcher Jason Kendall, 2B Adam Riggs and RF Socks Byrne
are expected to have spectacular years once again.
Tradewinds
Hartford is still looking for pitching and a LF or CF.
