PVBL: Hartford Whalers
Whalers crushed at home

July 22, 1998

Hartford (AP)- This "new look" team certainly is different and certainly does not represent one shred of what it means to be the defending World Champions that they are. The Whalers are 1-4 since the All-Star Break and appear to be sinking fast despite, for the first time this season, being quite healthy. Hartford opened up a homestand against the visiting Montreal Royals today and were pummeled for a total score of 24-2 in the double-dip. #1 starter Cal Eldred and sophomore Tony Saunders both took losses in very unimpressive, borderline pitiful, starts. Hartford lost the first game 17-0 and the second one 7-2. The first game was the worst loss in franchise history and the first time Hartford has been shutout this season. Of the day and his team, Manager Chrabascz said, "Well, I'm not sure what to say. These guys played their asses off and stormed into the Break only 5 games back. Suddenly, we're 8 games back. I'll be honest in saying I'm not sure what the remedy is. There is plenty of talent on this club but I suppose we're young and unproven. Although a manager really shouldn't do this, I am already looking ahead to next season. I'm viewing this season as a learning experience and great PT for the youngsters." Chrabascz's comments apparently infuriated Hartford's (few) veterans. While Joe Carter and Julio Franco skipped the post-game press conference and refused to comment, veteran utility man Tony Phillips raged, "What the (expletive) I came here because this organization was committed to winning and last season we DID win. I gave this organization my heart, soul and perhaps the best second half of a season in my career last year. This is (expletive) ridiculous. We're NOT an expansion team nor are we a minor league club. Experience is fine for the young guys but they have to learn to win, not lose. The way I see it, this (expletive) organization owes me (pause) and its fans." Joe Girardi simply said, "They let a lot of our friends and a lot of very talented players leave. Look at them now. I hear Mike (Stanley) and Gary (Sheffield) have been tearing it up." No word yet on what Chrabascz intends to do to increase morale, if anything.

Transactions

- After going 0-3 as a starter, Cal Eldred has been designated to middle relief.
- Mike Mimbs has resume the #1 starter role he relished prior to his injury.
- Catcher Jason Kendall will work everyday as Girardi warms the bench now.

Trade Winds

The Whalers are reportedly attempting to deal Phillips, Carter, Franco and Girardi. Offers are on the table. We'll keep you posted.
