Whalers lose big on and off the field June 15, 1998
The Hartford Whalers got pummelled by Laurel today, 10-7 and 11-1. But that's
not the worst of it as they also lost yet another starter-shortstop, Kurt
Abbott. Abbott pulled something in his leg and will be out indefinitely. This
marks the 9th player to become injured for the Whale this season, 6 having been
starting pitchers (Maddux, Brown, Saunders, Ardell, Wakefield, & Eldred...the
other three having been Matt Williams, Mike Stanley and Abbott).
The Whalers' depth is disappearing and they are moving around people like
lego's, hoping to find the right fit. A day after Tim Wakefield came off the
DL, Kevin Brown went on it. Today, Abbott went down and Jay Bell will have to
move from second to short and allow young second baseman Tilson Brito a chance
at the Big Show. Veteran infielder Ryne Sandberg was sent down to AAA to make
room for the rookie after struggling all season at the plate.
Needless to say, Hartford is back in second place .5 games behind Edmonton.
Only 3 games separate the #1 McCoy team from the #4 McCoy team, the most
competetive division in PVBL.
Hartford is desperate, it seems, for some relief pitching...maybe even a
starter.
