Saunders and Williams Off DL, Sele #5 Starter March 18, 1998
-On the recent trade "protests" of the exchange with Springfield, Manager Jeremy
Chrabascz simply sighed and said, "I'm not going to comment until this
so-called 'committee' has been formed and has rendered its official decision.
Until then, Randy (Velarde) will be on the bench, will have his family packed
and ready to go and should consider himself traded unless told otherwise."
-Before being traded to Spokane, the condition of Greg Maddux was upgraded from
"out over 6 months" to "out 4-6 months"
-Tony Saunders and Matt Williams have been removed from the DL, healthy, and
will immediately be reinserted into the lineup
-Cal Eldred has been placed on the DL for the second time this season with some
sort of pinched nerve that will have him out 6-8 weeks
-Recently acquired Aaron Sele will assume the #5 starter role immediately in
place of the ailing Eldred
-Recently acquired RF Gary Sheffield will immediately assume the RF vacancy
left by the departure of Derek Bell and will bat 3rd in the lineup just behind
Griffey and just ahead of Palmiero
-With Saunders returning, Bob Ardell will assume relief duties once again
-Rookie Will Cunanne now has 6 saves on the season, placing him just behind
Hartford's Hipolito Pichardo who has 7. Both are one of the Top 5 closers in
the EL right now
-Hartford has clung to its division lead, now 3.5 games, over Edmonton and
Deadwood who are tied for second. Montreal is still 8 games back.
-Hartford Owner/GM/Manager, Jeremy Chrabascz, as a sign of good faith, did, in
fact, agree to the recently released ammendment to the Maddux trade with
Spokane. However, it seems unlikely it will be necessary with his recent
upgrade in recovery status.
