Yesterday, Galena traded 1997 MVP Reggie Sanders to Motor City for 19 year
old second baseman Luis Castillo and young RF prospect Johnny Butler.
"Giving up Sanders was hard, but we knew his days were numbered when we
acquired Andruw Jones," noted owner Peck, "Sanders had talked about
leaving Galena after this season as a free agent as well, and this trade
assures that we get something of value for him instead of draft pick
compensation."
The Hamsters also just traded utility IF Chris Gomez to Deadwood for their
1st round pick in the amateur draft this June. Gomez, slated to star in an
upcoming episode of DS9 as himself, will appear as a Galena Hamster even
though he is a Outlaw. "The episode takes place during 1997," notes Gomez,
"so the fact that I'm getting traded doesn't mean a thing." Gomez was
traded for Deadwood's 1st round draft pick.
The Hamsters have acquired a boat load of young talent in the past year.
Among the future superstars of the Hamsters include Andruw Jones, Luis
Castillo, Johnny Butler, Scott Spiezio, John Aust, Wilton Guerrero, and
Tennessee Jones.
