Edmonton Comes Back Stronger than Before August 22, 1998
(AP)Edmonton- No one was more happier when word came around that the past 2 months
of the season would be replayed than Edmonton GM Brian Sculac. "Wow, we really
started to tank in the second half. We started 48-33, then went 17-30, and saw the
Deadwood Outlaws close to within 1 game. Now, with the replaying of the past 2
months, we find ourselves 7 games ahead of Deadwood. Whew. This time, we aren't
going to celebrate early. There's a way to go yet." The Oil Kings have been getting
great pitching from newcomers Pete Schourek and Chuck Finley. Jose Rosado, Kevin
Foster(a real surprise)and Kenny Rogers have also been outstanding. The closing
combo of Francisco Cordova and Mark Wohlers have combined for 31 saves. Probable
Rookie of the year, Jose Cruz Jr., is in the Top 10 in almost every Offensive
category, and leads the team in Home runs(27)and rbi's(67). 2b Joey Cora, hitting
leadoff, is 2nd on the club in ribbies with 66. Quite the feat for the diminutive
second sacker. "I've felt strong all season, probably the best shape I've been in
years." Can the Oil Kings hang on to win the Division? "I believe we can. And I
believe we can bring a Championship to Edmonton. It'd be nice to see a small market
club, a Canadian one at that, win it all."
