PVBL: Binghampton Mets
Mets Acquire Mieske and Witt

April 7, 1998

In an unprecedented and stunning move today, the Binghamton Mets sent Shawn Green, Mike Dasheill, Jose Barnowski and next year's FA #1 draft pick to the Chicago South siders for ace Bobby Witt and power hitting RF Matt Mieske. This trade works out great for both teams. Chicago adds youth to their youth movement, and Binghamton lands an ace and another power hitter. Owner Jason Garnar fielded questions from reporters throughout the conference, and here are some excerpts:

On Bobby Witt- "He's one of the top five pitchers in both leagues. He went 14-0 last year. I don't know of too many pitchers who have done that. He'll be our number one or two starter".

The departure of Shawn Green: "We will miss him, no doubt about that. He's going to be a great player someday."

On Matt Mieske-"Mieske is only 27, and he has a chance to develop a little more. You can't argue with someone who has can hit for power like he can."

The departure of Jose Barnowski: "Jose is young and might develop into a decent starting pitcher in a few years. Unfortunately for him, we didn't have the time to bring him around".

The departure of Mike Dasheill-"Good ^%^%## riddance. Dasheill had problems ever since we signed him. We know that he smokes pot constantly. In triple A, he has often come to the ballpark drunker than a skunk. Maybe the guys in chicago can help him, but I doubt it. Personally, i would like to see our commissioner come down a little harder on drug use in this league."

At the end of the conference, Garnar directly adressed the Spokane Pirates organization, saying "You boys have been bragging for awhile about how good your team is. Well, we'll see just how good it is. Personally, i think they're a low class organization and most of their players smoke crack".

Thus ended the press conference. The rumors spreading around that Garnar was personally buying up all the tickets for the upcoming road series against vero beach and giving them to rabid mets fans for free was met with a "No comment".
