Anchorage AK (AP) - The Abominations are by no means planning on sitting on
their hands this off-season. Talks have begun with a number of teams as
Anchorage looks to plug holes in its lineup, particularly the left side of
their infield. "We have made it a priority to strengthen our team, starting
with building a solid infield. We feel that we have a strong nucleus with
Miguel (Cairo) at second that we can build around. Our main concern right
now is the glaring hole at third base. Gary (Sheffield) has expressed his
displeasure with having to play full-time their, so we are looking at other
options." commented owner Nick Tulach at a late night dinner at Gianelli's.
Among the players who Anchorage has been shopping around are RF Paul O'Neill,
1Bs Greg Colbrunn and Eric Karros, 3B Tim Baldwin, infielder Luis Alicea, and
Ps Billy Wagner and Ron Villone. It is also rumored that they may be looking
to package Vero Beach's first round amateur draft pick, which they obtained in
the Nevin/Bottenfield deal. The Abominations were hoping to sign 3B Jeff
Cirillo in the free agent plan, but that effort seems to be shot down by
Thunder Bay's tenative selection of Dave Nillison.
