Abominations Pursue Player/Manager October 30, 1998
Anchorage AK (AP) - As the free agent draft draws closer, the Abominations
have begun the process to fill the vacant manager position. Sources says that
they have been in hot pursuit of current Edmonton Oil Kings leftfielder
Rickey Henderson. "We are doing our best to make an offer to retain Rickey's
rights as a player and we have spoken to him and he is interested in managing.
Unfortunately, we have not gotten a response from Edmonton as to our latest
offer. I am hoping to get this deal done before the free agent draft this
weekend." commented owner Nick Tulach when interviewed at Bullfeathers this
past weekend.
Henderson's agent briefly commented on the situation. "Rickey right now
is under contract with the Oil Kings and he is enjoying his offseason. He
has not made a decision as to whether he will retire as a player to pursue
a possible coaching position or if he will continue playing ball. We have
been contacted by the Abominations about the managing position and it looks
like a good opportunity for Rickey. It is something he has always been
interested in trying." Henderson himself was unavailable for comment. He is
a career .232 hitter with 21 career stolen bases. He struggled last season
for Edmonton, appearing in just 31 games and batting only .207 with 2 home runs and 2 stolen bases.
Notes:
- Anchorage GM "The Man" is enjoying his new position and office in Exxon
Field. "Wow, man, this is far out." Owner Nick Tulach has assigned him
the task of evaluating the bat-boys and ball-girls performance from last
and determining if the hotdogs are "regulation size". It is unknown if
"The Man" will represent the Abominations at the upcoming free agent draft.
- Starting pticher Felipe Lira had surgery today to repair an inflamed tricep
tendon in his pitching arm. The tendon, which had been bothering him all
season and finally put him out of the lineup indefinately on August 22, did
not respond to initial rehab. Anchorage is hoping that Lira will be
available for opening day. He is penciled in as the number one starter
for next season.
- Exxon field, the home of the Abominations, is undergoing some minor
remodelling. The 46,000 seat, open air, grass field is having 20 new
luxury boxes placed over the bleacher section in the outfield for "those
really, really rich bleacher bums". Also, the polar bear petting zoo is
being removed after several lawsuits from parents of children who were
maimed by the bears. A total of 8 children were killed and 12 injured
by the bears, which were said to be "blood-thirsty, child hungery, killers".
