Abominations Even Up Series With Lynx September 6, 1998
Laurel (AP) - After a disappointing start to the four game series at Laurel,
the Abominations came back with back-to-back strong outings from their
starting pitching as well as enough offense to spark hope of overtaking
seond place in the Spock division.
In game one, rookie hurler Mike Bottenfield got the support he needed from
his offense to earn his first major league victory. "It was good to have
the guys back me up with a lot of runs. Since I have been here, we have
been struggling on offense, which doesn't make my job any easier." said
Bottenfield in a post-game interview. The 'Boms had 14 hits, including 3
home runs -- two from unlikely backup shortstop Juan Castro -- that resulted
in a 11 run output from one of the worst offenses in the PVBL. "We brought
Gray [Sheffield] and F.P. [Santangelo] in to contribute and help us score
more runs. From the looks of it, initially, I am happy with their effort."
commented GM Nick Tulach. F.P. stole the day with 4 hits in 6 at-bats and
two RBIs. Pitcher Don Wengert also saw his first action since coming off
the DL.
Game 2 of the double-header proved to be more of the type that the 'Boms
are accustomed to. Another outstanding performance was put out by the 'Boms
number one starter, Brett Tomko. Brett pitched 7 and 2/3 innings, spreading
around 10 hits and only giving up one run. "It may not have been the
prettiest outing of his career, but he got the job done." said GM Nick
Tulach. For the second straight game, backup shortstop Juan Castro homered
and the 'Boms also got a run across on an error by Laurel catcher Haselman.
Ron Villone recorded his third save of the year.
