Anchorage (AP) - Gary Sheffield met the Anchorage press for the first time
since being traded to the budding franchise. "I am happy to have a new
home, a new contract, and new fans that appreciate my game. I have some big
shoes to fill, but I know that I can do it." When asked about the weather
in Anchorage, Sheffield replied, "Well, I've been in a lot of cities, but
this has got to be the coldest. I've never said anything about not wanting
to play in cold weather. I enjoy the game of baseball and will play rain,
sleat, or, I guess in this case, snow."
Anchorage is planning on playing Sheffield mostly at third base, a move
that he is very happy with. "I like the infield much better. I feel more a
part of the game and I believe playing there helps my confidence as a
hitter." After trading Phil Nevin away to Vero Beach, the 'Boms have had a
huge hole at third base.
F.P. Santangelo was also in attendence at the press conference. He will
fill in the starting role as centerfielder for the 'Boms. "I'm glad I can
come in and get a chance to be an everyday player again. It is frustrating
sitting the bench when you know there are teams out there that can use your
talents. I'm glad that I get a chance to play here, in front of these great
fans."
Santangelo has the task of replacing the team best player in the field.
When asked about what he plans to do to live up to the expectations, F.P.
replied, "Well, I'm not going to fool you and say that I have the speed or
great hitting of Lance [Johnson, former centerfielder], but I will promise
you this. I will give 110% everyday.
Both Santangelo and Sheffield should be available for the upcoming series
verses Laurel. --written by Nick Tulach
