J. Lee Gohlke, owner and operator of the Vero Beach Bums, announced today at a press conference that his team would no longer buy shoes or equipment from the Raebek Corporation.Ê Raebek, a major worldwide shoe and apparel manufacturer that has endorsement deals with hundreds of athletes, including Vero Beach's Marquis Grissom and Jeff King, as well as equipment contracts with numerous college and professional teams, had no comment.
Gohlke stated at the press conference: "I think I've finally put it all together.Ê Why do we have so many injuries?Ê Why does Tom Pagnozzi have a bruised heel that won't go away?Ê Why did Omar Vizquel break his foot? Why did both Eddie Perez and Jeff King rupture discs in their back?Ê I have the answer.
"It's gotta be the shoes."
Gasps filled the smoky room behind the Vero Beach clubhouse.Ê Reporters quickly responded with questions.Ê Gohlke quieted the room.Ê "Okay, one at a time, please.Ê Yes, we have another contract, with the Nietzsche Shoe Company.Ê They have a proven record of excellence and a nifty logo.Ê Yes, we'll be wearing the flagship model, the Ueberschuh.Ê No, we don't know what we're going to do with all the old shoes.Ê We don't want to donate them because we're afraid that someone might hurt themselves.Ê We will auction off our old uniforms for charity, however."Ê Gohlke stated that everything will be replaced, from the uniforms, caps, socks and shoes to the batting and fielding gloves.
"If this doesn't work we may be giving Mayville Slugger a call," concluded Gohlke.
