Vero Takes 3 of 4 from Phoenix in Adams' Debut

In his debut as a Vero Beach Bum, Willie Adams pitched seven strong innings in a 3-2 win over the Phoenix Gila Monsters in Saturday's game. He struck out eleven and walked only 2, giving up just one run on five hits. Trevor Hoffman also got his eleventh save. Phoenix pitcher Pedro Astacio pitched eight good innings, giving up three runs on eight hits and two walks and striking out six.

Phoenix made the game close in the eighth inning; with Vero Beach up 3-0, the Gila Monsters scored two off of Adams and reliever Billy Wagner. Mark Guthrie closed out the eighth and the Gila Monsters did no further damage.

Vero Beach scored all of their runs in the fourth and sixth innings. Ron Gant hit a 2-run home run in the fourth with Brian Jordan on base. In the sixth, Jeff King hit his second triple of the year and scored on Tony Fernandez's RBI single.

"This was a good series against a worthy opponent," stated J. Lee Gohlke, Vero Beach CEO. "Phoenix has a good team, but we got the better of them in Dry Heat Ravine Stadium. Let's see how they like the humidity in Florida next week." After their next 3-game series at Binghamton and Chicago, Vero Beach and Phoenix duel again, this time at Ellsworth Park in Vero Beach.

Gohlke said that Marquis Grissom should appear in the Bums' starting lineup for today's doubleheader against Binghamton.
