Vero Beach split the doubleheader today with Phoenix. Marquis Grissom made his debut as catcher in the second game, replacing Tom Pagnozzi in the eighth inning. He allowed just one passed ball.
J. Lee Gohlke, Vero Beach chief executive, responded to this gaffe by firing himself as field manager and hiring Phil Garner, former Houston Astros infielder and manager of an underachieving but lovable team in another league, as manager effective immediately. "Maybe this symbolic move will prevent my other position players from being inexplicably put behind the plate," sighed Gohlke. "Dave Hollins had a tough time of it already. Now, in Grissom's first week here, it's happened again."
Shane Reynolds beat the Bums for his league-leading 13th win in the first game, striking out 12 and giving up 2 runs. Raul Mondesi had 3 stolen bases in that game for the Gila Monsters.
In the second game, Albie Lopez won his seventh for the Bums in a 6-4 victory. Jack McDowell took the loss for Phoenix. Jeff King clinched the game in the eighth inning with a grand slam, his 18th homer of the year.
