The Vero Beach Bums defeated the Spokane Paladins 8-7 on June 7, maintaining their half-game lead over Binghamton in the Picard Division. Vero Beach won the game in the eighth inning over Bill Pulsipher, who gave up one run on no hits. Bums reliever Kent Bottenfield pitched a perfect eighth and ninth for the win.
Vero won the game in the eighth with 3 walks and a sacrifice fly by Ernie Young, who was 0 for 3 on the day but had the game-winning RBI. Omar Vizquel was again a big contributor, going 3 for 4 with 1 homer, 3 RBIs, 1 stolen base, and 4 runs.
Spokane starter Wilson Alvarez had no decision, giving up five runs in six innings. Vero Beach starting pitcher Bill Goldsmith worked into the seventh inning, giving up eleven hits and five runs but striking out 8. Vero Beach setup man Terrell Wade gave up 2 runs in the seventh that almost cost the Bums the game.
