The deal that sent DH Pete Incaviglia and pitcher John Hayes (and two others) to Atlanta for Gregg Jefferies, Ernie Young, Larry Gulden, and Doug Jones has been confirmed by the Vero Beach front office. J. Lee Gohlke, Vero Beach CEO, added, "Now that we've got a surplus of first basemen and centerfielders we're looking to trade some more." He indicated that their main needs are a legitimate power hitter (PH of 85 or more) or an ace starting pitcher. Rumored to be on the trading block are Al Pechous, Chuck Carr, Dave Hollins (for another 3rd baseman), Tony Fernandez, and, interestingly, Jefferies.
Meanwhile, Vero Beach shut out Duluth today 5-0, with hits from newcomers Young and Jefferies. Jefferies hit a double and a home run. Albie Lopez pitched seven innings and struck out 8 batters.
