STATE OF THE PVBL
Edition 6

August 10, 1997

Wow! Already, another "State of the PVBL"? Yes, it's true. There's tons of things to tell you all about. Don't get used to reports on a regular basis, OK? (I'm not going to spend this amount of time ALL the time.) This is also much shorter than the previous one, but still contains important news items. Hopefully, the PVBL will be on cruise control until the end of the season!

[1] TRANSACTIONS

Matt has requested that a Transactions Page be made separately to the Press Releases Page. Shortly you will find a link on the Press Releases Page to a separate page containing the transactions. Matt will also add this link to the PVBL Home Page.

The transactions files record all roster moves, lineup changes, players put on the DL, and trades between teams.

[2] PR HOME PAGE EXPANDS IN SIZE!

I am proud to announce that the PR Home Page, located at GeoCities, recently acquired another 1 MEG of hard drive space. That's a total of 3 Megs, which will certainly help for all the press releaases you people have been writing! The additional space was all thanks to you fellow owners: GeoCities adds extra space when traffic increases. Thanks!

[3] THE FACEOFF OF THE SEASON

Anyone who hasn't noticed the year-long duel between the Hartford Whalers and the Deadwood Outlaws should pay attention to it now. Both teams are currently neck-and-neck at a record of 66-45. There's no signs of the rivalry cooling down shortly. Both teams have been making those trades that matter. They've been in a flurry of moves, trying to make the smart one that will propel them over the top.

Hartford has recently regained a tie with the Outlaws after winning 6 in a row. Deadwood meanwhile, has only lost 2 of it's last 10 games. Obviously, both teams can't continue at this pace all year. Whoever loses one step may be out of the race, or at least will have to settle for the wild card.

Deadwood and Hartford will face each other next time in a 2 game series on the 2nd and 3rd of September.

Meanwhile, there's another duel that has emerged between Brooklyn and Motor City. Both teams are on a losing streak, but they have been playing over .600 ball as of late. Both teams are in a deadlock, although the Motor City Madmen have played two more games than Brooklyn.

So all these teams have been very active on the trading circle. Just yesterday, Brooklyn acquired powerhitting Brady Anderson in exchange for their young leftfielder, Todd Hollandsworth. Meanwhile, teams who have dropped out of the race for good are looking to pick up players to improve their team next season.

(Boy is this getting exciting...)

[4] STATISTICIAN OUT FOR SEASON

John Dybala, the PVBL statistician was placed on the DL August 10th, and will be undergoing reconstructive surgery on his knee. His duties will be undertaken by Matthew Peck, the acting PVBL commissioner. Doctors say that it probably won't be until the end of the season before he returns.

Happy holidays!
