Hoiles May Head to DL

Chris Hoiles may, six weeks after sustaining a 19% injury, be heading to the disabled list if his injury is not healed in the next few days. Knights owner/GM John Dybala had avoided this move, since once Hoiles is on the DL he is not eligible to come off for two weeks. However, six weeks have passed with no improvement, so the time has probably come.

"I don't know what it is," said Hoiles in a telephone interview this afternoon. "My foot just won't heal. I know I haven't been rushing a comeback, because I know Curry (Powell) can do the job."

Powell, while not putting up the power numbers that Hoiles has, has nonetheless been solid defensively and hasn't done a bad job at the plate, either. Word is that the Knights have received several inquiries about the youngster, but are reluctant to trade him with Hoiles still hurting and Victor Lezcano as the only other catcher available. Lezcano played in four games with the parent club earlier in the season but hit a disappointing .111 and was returned to the AAA club as soon as another catcher (Powell) became available. Rumors -- none coming from sources with the team -- have the Knights searching the waiver wire and the various trading blocks for a backup catcher that would allow them to cut Lezcano from their roster, assuming they can't trade him first.

Media reports from Seattle also have the Larimer Knights engaged in trade talks surrounding Knights malcontent Bill Mueller, rookie shortstop Pokey Reese, and Washington infielder Jose Offerman. Details will be posted as they become available.
