LAPORTE, CO, October 9, 1997 -- The so-called Battle of the Officers continued yesterday in the small northern Colorado town of Laporte, and thus far it is a draw. The Larimer Knights evened the series with Punxatawney with a 3-2 win yesterday afternoon, thanks to some solid pitching by Jack Broskie, who was mysteriously pulled after 4 innings, Tim Davis, who may be making a case for being re-inserted into the starting rotation, and Nick Blair, who earned his first save in a Knights uniform.
In other news --
And then there was one: Knights right-fielder Orlando Merced was activated from the DL this morning. He will start tonight's game in right field. The Knights now have all but one of their front-line players back. Chris Hoiles remains in AAA on a rehab assignment while his bruised heel continues its strangely slow healing process.
To make room for Merced, Tom Brunansky was demoted to AAA. He handled his demotion far better than the last person to be demoted did. Bill Mueller threw a temper tantrum and attacked a row of lockers with a baseball bat upon hearing that he had been demoted earlier this week. He was fined $500 and asked to be traded. Reports indicate that owner John Dybala is trying to honor that request, and is working on a trade which might send Mueller and shortstop Pokey Reese out of town.
Speaking of going out of town, John Dybala, along with assistant GM Allison Cashwell, are going on a retreat with their church tomorrow and will be gone until late Sunday afternoon.
