Whalers out muscle the Outlaws

Deadwood (AP)- The Hartford Whalers won their second-straight game and their fourth-straight decision over the Deadwood Outlaws today, 9-6.Ê With the win, Hartford continued its dominance of Deadwood and moved into yet another first-place tie in the McCoy Division of the Enterprise League.Ê Hartford also continued its domnance of its division, moving to 35-19 on the season, one of the best divisional records in the PVBL (second only, perhaps, to Ponxatawney). Rookie phenom, John Burke (5-3) struggled mightily but pitched a complete game (1st career) for the win.Ê Burke allowed 6 earned runs on 15 hits in 9 innings of work while striking out 3 batters.Ê Feeling victory was immanent, Manager Jeremy Chrabascz stuck with Burke, hoping to save Hartford's bullpen up for the remainder of the 3-game road set in Deadwood.Ê Rafael Palmiero provided the biggest punch for Hartford's offense, hitting a towering 3-run shot as his only hit on the day.Ê Joe Girardi had a big day, going 2-4 with a 2B, 2 RBI and a stolen base.Ê Hartford stole 3 bases on Deadwood on the day as Randy Velarde and Ken Griffey Jr. both stole second in the contest as well.

Aaron Sele (3-4) goes tomorrow in Game 2 of the 3-game road series with Deadwood as Hartford looks to build a lead in the division while extending its winning streak.Ê Their ace, Greg Maddux (12-3), pitching the final game of the series on Thursday.

Also of note:Ê Montreal and Edmonton have both quietly moved to within 11 games, exactly, of first-place Hartford and Deadwood.Ê The game appears to be afoot!

Trade Winds
