The Hartford Whalers, in an attempt to rescue its faultering pitching staff, has decided to focus on speed in the hopes of increasing overall run production. Hartford immediately called up Vince Coleman, and Todd Walker. The Whalers are going with the top speed at every position; Griffey, Reynolds, Coleman, Palmiero, Girardi, Walker, Abbott, Whiten, and Velarde.
AVERAGE SPEED OF THE NEW LINEUP: 54.3
The new lineup should make its debut against Galena today or tomorrow as Coleman (SP-65) will begin playing lead-off. Maddux (10-2) takes the mound today, hoping to rebound from a disappointing outing last time out against Cockeysville.
To make room for Walker, Coleman and Broskie, Hartford sent Cheadle, Pendleton, Grove and Colbert all down to AAA.
Chrabascz seemed quite excited about the move, "Everyone said we have 'no' speed. I think we'll prove them wrong. I don't expect immediate results but, in the long run and in the close ones I think we'll come out on top. I mean, how many lineups average almost 54 and a half speed? None, I'd guess."
Along these same lines (of focus on speed), Hartford is still pursuing Duluth's Alex Rodriguez aggressively.
