Austin Shuts Down Hartford

The Hartford Whalers dropped two in Austin today, seeing their lead in the EL's McCoy Division slip to two games over Deadwood (formerly Seattle). Kenny Rogers, after winning his first 5 decisions, has floundered since. Rogers allowed 5 earned runs in six innings of work in game 1, while walking 4 in the 6-4 loss. Game 2 proved to be a pitching duel as Erickson out-gunned rookie John Burke, 1-0. Burke allowed 1 earned run through 8 innings of work in his first career complete game while striking out 3 and walking 1. Burke fell to 2-3. Chrabascz was disgusted with his team's effort following the second game, "Our offense hasn't been worth poo lately. We average leaving 10 runners or so on base every game it seems. That can't happen in a pennant race. The kid (Burke) had superb control tonight and it was all for not. John should not have a losing record, especially for someone going for rookie of the year." Hartford did receive some good news today when it learned the Griffey would be returning to the lineup immediately after a month absence with a broken finger. "Let's hope he provides a spark. Rafael hasn't," said Chrabascz upon hearing the news.

Trade Winds

Hartford is apparently still seeking some pitching depth, especially starting pitching. It is rumored that even Kenny Rogers and Jose Rosado are available for the right price.
