Shortly after agreeing on a trade that would send Jeff Bagwell to the Hartford Whalers for three pitchers, Tampa Bay reneged its offer in order to use Bagwell in a trade with DC. Both Tampa Bay and Hartford had agreed upon the afore-mentioned trade and had both confirmed the transaction to league commissioner, Matt, before Tampa Bay changed its mind. League rules state that the deal can be nixed only if both parties agree to it. The Hartford Whalers, in light of the grief this ordeal has already caused so many players and their families, has decided to allow the Tampa Bay-DC deal to proceed. However, the Whalers are actively seeking some sort of compensation (talent-wise) from Tampa Bay and/or DC. Hartford has also asked league comissioner, Matt, to mediate the settlement proceedings. No word back has been received from the league office as yet.
We'll keep you posted as this story develops...
Tradewinds
Until the situation with Tampa Bay is settled, tradewinds have cooled in Hartford despite the fact that it was also in the middle of a deal for Rafael Palmiero and/or Jim Edmonds. The Whalers organization will wait to see what happens with the league office prior to re-opening talks for Palmiero and Edmonds.
