Seattle (AP)- Starting pitcher, Kenny Rogers (5-1), allowed 4 earned runs in 2 innings of work in his first loss of the season, a 12-5 drubbing at the hands of second-place Seattle. Reliever Charlie Rothrock blew yet another game for Hartford, allowing 6 runs in a couple of innings of work. The Whalers' abominable pitching spoiled the amazing performance of All-Star first baseman, Paul Sorrento, who homered twice (four times total today alone) in this Game 2 of a double header. Sorrento leads the EL with 16 homers, 49 RBI and 34 runs. Extremely upset with himself, Rothrock had this to say of today's game (2), "I was horrible. I'm being demoted and I deserve to be demoted. I think I blew 2 or 3 games for us, single-handedly, this week alone. I've sucked." Despite Rothrock's candor, Manage Jeremy Chrabascz was more restrained in stating, "Charlie needs some time in the minors to build his confidence and find his control. He had a bad week and perhaps we pushed him too hard, too soon." When asked about splitting the 4 game series with Seattle, Chrabascz said, "I'm quite pleased to split a series on the road, especially with a team of such high caliber. These guys are going to be fighting with us until the final day of the regular season. I guarantee it." Note: Jose Rosado pitched another strong game and the bullpen finally came through, helping Jose to his 2nd win of the season (2-0)...in Game 1, a victory over Seattle.
Transactions
Charlie Rothrock has been sent to AAA to make way for Dan Davis' return to the Hartford bullpen. Daryl Strawberry was actived from the DL and resumed his spot in left field (he recorded his first hit in his first game back, game 2 of today's double-dip).
News & Notes
Tony Gwynn sprained his ankle in Game 2 today but will not go on the DL. He is listed as day-to-day. Ken Griffey Jr. could rebound from his broken finger as early as a week from now.
Rookie infielder Howie Paulette is producing and impressing his coaches and will remain at short and will continue to hit leadoff until further notice.
Rumors
Despite Chrabascz's frustration with trade talks he is apparently nearing an agreement to trade 3 quality pitchers for All-Star slugger, Jeff Bagwell.
